MANILA, Philippines — Kevin Quiambao attributed his new career-high to the support of his teammates as La Salle found ways to quash University of Santo Tomas’ gallant stand in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament. ADVERTISEMENT

With the defending champions pushed to their limits, Quiambao brought out his best scoring yet of 29 points on 4-of-6 three-point shootings, along with nine rebounds and three assists.

But the reigning MVP, who has a newborn baby as his main motivation, chose to focus on the hard-earned victory–La Salle’s fifth straight–instead of basking in the glory of his most recent feat.FEATURED STORIES SPORTS PBA Finals: TNT carries extra weapons into duel vs Ginebra SPORTS 2024 PBA Finals schedule: Barangay Ginebra vs TNT Tropang Giga SPORTS Tim Cone, Ginebra locked in on getting back at TNT for PBA title UAAP: Royce Alforque, FEU learn from first round heartbreak vs NU FEU Tamaraws' Veejay Pre and Royce Alforque during a UAAP Season 87 men's basketball game against NU Bulldogs FEU Tamaraws' Veejay Pre and Royce Alforque during a UAAP Season 87 men's basketball game against NU Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines —Royce Alforque made sure there would be no meltdown this time around for Far Eastern University.

Alforque conspired with Jorick Bautista in the crucial moments to help register the Tamaraws’ first winning streak of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament and avenge their first-round loss to the Bulldogs.

In their last meeting last September 14, FEU blew a 13-point lead for a heartbreaking 62-60 loss highlighted by missed crucial free throws from rookie Janrey Pasaol.

MANILA, Philippines–La Salle extended its blistering winning streak in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament to five by handing University of Santo Tomas a 94-87 overtime loss on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Kevin Quiambao had a career-high 29 points that came with nine rebounds and Mike Phillips finished with another double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Green Archers clinched the solo top spot with a 8-1 record.

“We’re not surprised at how UST played. We always remind ourselves that every team will be out competing against us. Coach Pido Jarencio and the rest of the staff are really doing a tremendous job in making sure they’re a competitive group,” coach Topex Robinson said.

Far Eastern University  strung up a first-ever winning streak in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament after dealing slumping National University  a 65-58 beating on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Mo Konateh came up big once again with another double-double performance of 22 points and 13 rebounds while Tamaraw hero Jorick Bautista had a 50 percent shooting to 17 points as FEU improved to a 3-6 card.

“I don’t want to sound like a broken record. But like I said a couple weeks back, this second round of the season is going to be a lot different for us. We’re getting comfortable, we’re getting acclimated. We’re starting to understand our desires, our goals, and our focus on our game plan,” coach Sean Chambers said.

After eight games so far, two teams, unsurprisingly, still banner the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament—defending champion La Salle and last year’s Finals rival University of the Philippines (UP), who are both sporting similar 7-1 (win-loss) records.

When the two squads locked horns once again this season, the Green Archers reasserted their dominance over the Fighting Maroons in an emotion-filled 68-56 result, thus ensuring that no team got past the first round without a scratch.

To start the second round, La Salle avenged its only loss dealt by fast-rising University of the East by trimming the Warriors, 77-68. UP, meanwhile, repeated over University of Santo Tomas (UST), which led the Season 84 champions in both games they faced off only to crack when it mattered the most.
